Description

This young man is about 5'8", and has yet to fill out to his full adult potential in height or musculature, but it still looks as if he isn't a stranger to hard work. He has dark blond hair that always looks as if he's just woken up, and dark grey eyes that give him a serious expression. His jaw is square, framing soft pink lips and a rounded nose.

Background

Augustin was born to Claude and Juliette Rousseau, originally of Aix-Les-Bains, France. He was born in England and is the only son, but has an older sister, Francine, and a younger sister, Lizette. Francine is happily married and spends her days writing fashion critiques for the wizarding world, which she and her husband travel often. Lizette has another year before she'll enter Hogwards. Augustin had a fairly happy childhood on the family's small estate in the south of England, with private tutors to learn reading and writing, English, and art. He showed an aptitude for sculpture from an early age, and has moved on from papier mache to carving wood. His parents approve of his artistic leanings. Augustin has shown himself to be an adept student, though he has always been content to let others shine and take the lead. As a Hufflepuff, he has been known to go out of his way to be friendly, and has chums from each of the other houses as well.

Augustin, as the Rousseau heir, is expected to marry well, to a witch of pure-blood heritage, and eventually take over his family estate, which produces some fine wines, prefered by many English wizards and witches for spells and recreation. Despite his upbringing, Augustin never really understood his parent's fussiness over a pure-blood bride — his friends at school come from all different backgrounds. At the end of his fifth year he was heard to remark to his mother that he's far too young to think of marriage, yet. She didn't look convinced and it's well known that she began her search for his future bride in earnest that summer.

Augustin's great passion was always for art. It's amazing his grades were as good as they were, for at school he was always working on another carving, or planning one in his sketchbook, or searching for suitable wood to carve. One notable occasion in his fourth year had him in the infirmary with two broken arms because he was trying to retrieve a fallen branch from the whomping willow — to this day no one knows what he meant to carve from it! More than one adult has remarked that Augustin showed great artistic skill for one so young, and he has been known to check out art books from the library, and talk about visiting museums both in England and abroad.

On the way to Hogwarts this year, he met a rather pretty young woman, Lillian, who found herself in much the same quandary as he - her father wanted to marry her off. And so a secret bargain was struck, that they will pretend to be each other's beau, if only to get their parents off their backs. That didn't last too long, however.

Gus later dated a girl named Eibhlin, a quiet redhead Half-Blood. He was worried that his mother won't approve of her, so held off telling his family about her.

During the Sykes Family Gala of 1938, Augustin's mother, Juliette Rousseau, was killed during a terrorist attack. Shortly thereafter he quit Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and went home to the family vineyards in Kent, to help his father and care for his sister.

Eibhlin broke up with him at the beginning of February, much to his disappointment. He felt abandoned right when he needed the most support, and it's embittered him, at least temporarily, to the idea of being in a relationship. It will take a special girl to pull him out of his little shell, now.

Currently Gus is running a shop in North Verdic Alley, called Rousseau Vineyards, selling bottles of wine to passers-by. The shop is doing good business. He's looking forward to Lizette starting school at Hogwarts this year, and possibly hiring a part-time employee, which will give him more time to pursue his artistic interests. Having recently learned of WADA, a fine arts wizarding school, he wants to know more.

The terrorist attack on July 27th included a man dying horribly right in front of his eyes, and Gus is understandably upset. He's not sure what to do, or how he can protect his sisters and his father.

Random facts about Gus:
- When I was six my father took me hunting, and when I saw him kill a bird I cried about it for two days.
- My first act of accidental underage magic was to light the parlor carpet on fire.
- I speak fluent French.
- I am allergic to bees.
- I am related to King Charlemagne.
- I once broke my leg falling from a roof.
- I don't like bananas.
- I once nearly drowned in the lake.

Wand

Gus' wand is: 14.5 inches long, made of poplar wood. The core is unicorn hair.

Poplar: “If you seek integrity, search first among the poplars,” was a great maxim of Gerbold Ollivander, a saying that Garrick Ollivander supports based on his experience of poplar wands and their owners. It is said to be a wand to rely upon, of consistency, strength and uniform power, always happiest when working with a witch or wizard of clear moral vision.

Unicorn hair Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.
