Description

This young girl seems to be about twelve years of age, if that. Standing a little over four and a half feet tall, she's still somewhat short for her age, and scrawny too. She has brown hair, which is straight and hangs down to about her shoulders. Her eyes are a pale blue, and she has a tiny scar on her neck near her throat.

At the moment Josie is wearing a Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizardry uniform. Rather notable by the scarlet and gold colouring she must have sorted into House Gryffindor. A grey vest edged in gold and scarlet covers a crisp white Oxford shirt, buttoned from the belt-line to the collar and accented with a scarlet tie with narrow gold stripes. The shirt is tucked neatly into a matching grey pleated skirt. Skirt and stockings meet at the knees, and black shoes are worn on the feet. Over all of this flows a voluminous black robe lined in soft Gryffindor Scarlet fabric, unadorned except for a scarlet maned golden lion standing rampant over a scarlet background with gold fret sewn over the heart.

Background

Ashley Davies was born in a circus family, her mother an Italian acrobat and her father a British, and trained from a young age to be an acrobat, like her parents before her. That was the life she knew until late 1923. That's when she fell in love with an exotic man in London. With the circus leaving town, she stayed behind for him. What happened next is a mystery, but she was left a year later unmarried, with no job and a baby girl: Josephine Alexandra Davies.

Ashley got a job as a seamstress, but she held dreams of returning to the circus, of finding her family once again. So, she waited in London, but she trained, and as soon as Jo was old enough she joined the training too. By the time Jo was five she was able to walk a tightrope. Ashley, half Italian and half English, spoke both languages and Jo learned to as well.

All in all, she was a happy child. She didn't understand that her mother struggled with money, or that she was looked down upon for being a single mother. All she knew was that her mother loved her, and someday they'd be famous circus performers.

That dream died, however, just before Jo was due to start school. Walking home from where Ashley worked, the pair were robbed at knifepoint. One grabbed Jo and put a knife to her neck, even giving her a small cut, while the other threatened Ashley.

Then, things got weird. The man holding Jo pushed a little harder with his knife, but suddenly found himself holding a rather angry rat. The man let go of Jo in surprise, and she ran. She made it a block before she realized her mother wasn't running with her, then turned to go back. She found her mother dying, in a pool of blood.

Jo's been on her own ever since that night. At first, life was very difficult. Life on the streets of London was dangerous for a child, especially for a girl. Luckily, Jo was quick and agile and a good runner. Eventually she started dressing like a boy, cutting her own hair to pass, and life became just a little easier.

Thinking that she was at fault for her mother's death, however, she slowly took on an attitude of embracing danger. It wasn't consistent, she still kept dressing as a boy and was careful around the most dangerous people she met, but she'd do crazy things to prove her bravery. Once, she even tried jumping over the alleyway between two tall buildings. She thought she was a goner that time, when her jump didn't carry her far enough, but she floated like a feather to the ground.

As much of a survivor as she became, she likely would have died on the streets if not for Jimmy Shore. The Shore Gang was a small-time mob that was one of many trying to compete with the Italians. Jo first came to Jimmy's attention when he realized she could speak Italian, and used her to spy on public conversations, and later he started to use her as a runner and lookout when he realized how quick she was.

Eventually, he taught her how to pick pockets. Of course, he had to have his share, (which was the majority), but she made enough between this and the other jobs he gave her to eat regularly. As years passed, she got better and even occasionally came away with jewelry. She learned quickly who to go to for the best prices.

Jo's life was difficult, but the weird things that kept happening to save her when she was in the most danger started to give her confidence. With that confidence, her outlook shifted. She became an optimist, always sure that tomorrow had to be better because today sucked so much. This outlook let her find joy in her life occasionally, and many friends.

Things continued like this until Jo's eleventh birthday. That's when everything changed. A man in a colourful robe was waiting for her as she emerged from her hiding place that morning. He not only knew she was a girl, but he knew her full name. He explained that he was a wizard, and that she was a witch, and that she was invited to attend a special school called Hogwarts. Jo had to see some magic before she believed, but once she had she was excited and eager.

The wizard took her to a place called the Leaky Cauldron, where he rented her a room. Then, behind it he took her to Diagon Alley to buy her wand, robes, and school supplies. When she said she had no money, he said that there was money set aside for those like her. Her books would end up being used, as would her robes, but she didn't care.

The wizard would return every day after that, for a few hours in the morning to help Jo learn to read and write. She'd be far behind many of her classmates, but he assured her that she wasn't the only one just learning, and she'd get it eventually.

When she finally ventured out to what she now knew of as the muggle world again, she encountered a friend who warned her to stay away from Shore territory. Jimmy had taken her disappearance as a betrayal, assuming she'd scored big pickpocketing and gone off on her own without paying him.

RP Hooks

  • Lives on the Fawley Farm, was there for the 1937 and 1938 Creature Camps.
  • 6 years pretending to be a boy in the Shore gang in Hoxton, though her pickpocketing sometimes ventured into other areas. Maybe you knew her then.
  • Josie serves as a Student Aide to Professor of Care of Magical Creatures, Silvanus Kettleburn.

Personality

Jo is an optimist, always seeing the best for the future because she believes it has to balance out for all the bad that's happened to her. More, she's ambitious, wanting to be the most famous person in the world, even if she doesn't know for what yet. If something scares Jo, she's more likely to run right for it than away, trying to prove her own bravery, especially if people are watching.

Having been pretending to be a boy for over half her life, she's a tomboy and loves physical games, and knows very little about living up to society's expectations of a girl. She is still a girl, however, and she no longer tries to hide it.

Jo's spent the last 6 years of her life on the street. As such, she places survival first over moral questions, but when survival's not at stake she's generally a good person. She's loyal to her friends, almost to a fault, but she has no qualms about stealing from others, and she has a difficult time understanding rules in the way that most kids have learned to accept them. Jo also always plays to win, be it in sports or in fights.

Camilla

Camilla
She's not really my mother, but she's the closest thing to it. She's always there for me, no matter what, but she goes kind of insane if I get into danger.

Bannon

Bannon
My father. He's an auror, he fights evil wizards and monsters for a job. I've seen him tapdance with a bogart! Nothing scares him. I don't think he wants me to be an auror too, but so far it's the most fun job I've heard of. I spent half the summer with him this year, we're finally getting used to each other.

Lucian

Lucian
He's a Slytherin, and doesn't really like Gryffindor. But he gets me. Really gets how I think. He's helping me with my dueling, and Transfiguration. And, he's family. I think he's wrong about honour helping in life-or-death, if someone tries to kill me I'm gonna cheat to win, but I get what he means about nobody being able to take it.

Pro Quidditch player who came to stay with Camilla for the summer. Taught me to fly and is going to teach me Quidditch next summer. Even helped Camilla buy my broom!

My cat! Actually, she's a kneazle, or part kneazle anyway. The smartest animal I ever met!
