Synopsis

Ancient Runes is a mostly theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts of magic. The study of magical runes, glyphs and wards. Used for casting a number of spells with permanent and semi-permanent effects. Also useful for translating ancient wizarding texts and documents. This is an Elective Class.

Each particular subject roughly takes up two weeks time. Every class is two hours long.

In order to take Study of Ancient Runes at the N.E.W.T. level a student must have an 'E' Grade in their Study of Ancient Runes O.W.L.

• Inscribing Charm - This spell allows the caster to use the tip of their wand like a carving tool. Now that the students know the Wizarding Alphabet, it is practiced using different mediums. With the final being a set of rune stones inscribed with clear lettering.

After this spell is cast, the tip of the caster's wand can be used as a carving tool. This charm was designed to carve runes and other writing, so it cannot carve very deeply, but some wizards have found other creative uses for it. The charm will only carve into stone or wood. This does not hasten the process of carving, but it does bypass the need for carving equipment. This spell cannot be cast wandlessly.
