Synopsis

A surprisingly old field in some respects, the European branch of the discipline of Arithmancy is considered to have begun in the 13th century, when Bridget Wenlock created the first formal mathemagical theorem that gave discrete, quantifiable effects for the magical properties of the number seven. In practice, however, Arithmancy was relegated to independent study of advanced witches and wizards until the mid-17th century, and has experienced a relatively swift boom in students since that time.

There are three core parts to Arithmancy: understanding the significance of numbers, mastering the formulae to use the numbers, and a rigorous, thorough logical process for correcting errors. At its basics, Arithmancy is most useful for prediction of the future and magical accounting — banks can get odd when full of improperly handled precious minerals. A true Arithmancer can apply the discipline to almost everything, although speed of calculations is often a practical limitation.

As with Divination, proponents defend errors in prediction as user error rather than fault with the discipline; unlike Divination, however, there is a general sense that anyone can learn Arithmancy and apply it to make minor predictions successfully. Criticism from students who dislike the subject usually amounts to the feeling that in many cases, they spent almost as much time in calculations as was necessary for the future event to occur.

Each particular subject roughly takes up two weeks time. Every class is two hours long.

In order to take Astronomy at the N.E.W.T. level a student must have an 'E' Grade in their Astronomy O.W.L.
