Pet

Astoria owns two animals. One is a Greater Sooty Owl, named Onyxia, whose feathers are primarily charcoal. Astoria has owned the bird for fifteen years, and it has shown few signs of aging. She carries Astoria's post, but grudgingly; Onyxia is not a friendly creature by any means. The second animal is a massive Maine Coon who has snowy-white fur and black-tipped ears. Astoria purchased him from a Romani traveling-salesman who claimed the cat had no name, because no name was worthy of him. Intrigued, Astoria purchased the animal, though, in respect to the tale, has never named the cat - not that it matters, as he frequently obeys her as if the two share a private connection.

Description

A woman of middling height and narrow proportions. Her hair is light brown and often has a sheen to it, though it does not have a soft texture. Her skin is pale and not prone to acquiring much colour from the sun. Eyes, cheekbones, lips, jaw, and chin are narrow and pointed, often adopting a hawk-like expression accompanied with an intense, critical, focus. Her shoulders are the broadest of her features, but her body quickly narrows into a figure with few curves. She is certainly not thin, however. Her arms and legs have unpronounced muscle, as if once worked but presently underused.

Background

Born to the House of Bletchley, Astoria lived a quiet life until she was nine years old. Her father, a member of the wizengamot, was slapped with misconduct involving another official's wife, which framed Astoria's life in an extremely negative manner for her years at Hogwarts and several years after.

Astoria was sorted into Slytherin. She got along very well with her house-mates, but due to her father's reputation she was often surrounded by rumors. Her family's name, and her weight, left her the butt-end of many pranks and jokes. She scored well in her OWLs and NEWTs, winning her the opportunity to apply for most Ministry of Magic positions. Unfortunately, none panned out.

Astoria worked as a clerk and attendant in a few stores in Diagon Alley for several years after graduation. Not many people recognized her. Then, one day, she inexplicably disappeared. She returned in 1938 and took a position at the Daily Prophet.

Quirks

  • Fierce: Astoria has a strong, palpable will and does not usually fail to see her projects and ambitions reach completion. This is often a boon to people she knows, as she is fiercely dedicated, unless you stand in her way.
  • Moxie: Astoria is confident in her abilities and knowledge, which usually results in her saying, and doing, things that others might not dream of. This is in sharp contrast to her nervous behavior as a child, and not many are sure where it stems from.
  • Obsessive: When attached to a project, Astoria has a difficult time detaching herself. This is especially true of her desire to see her family's reputation restored, and her personal studies in ancient runes, old texts, and ancient manuscripts.
  • Overambitious: While Astoria's desire to see the Bletchley name restored to its former glory is a noble one, it is perhaps too much for one person to accomplish. Astoria's willpower may not be equal to the task, or she may take the pursuit too far.
  • Wealth: Well-to-Do

RP Hooks

  • Pure-Blood: Member of the powerful House of Bletchley.
  • Daily Prophet: Bump-ins are inevitable.
  • Teased: Used to be made fun of at Hogwarts. Did you tease her?
  • Author: Astoria has published several articles in a journal that features works discussing ancient runes, and she has published two separate books on the topic. Their titles are The First Language of Magic and The Most Ancient Texts: The Relevancy of Ancient Runes in the Twentieth Century. Neither text exceeds fifty pages. Her work has been received well by critics, but neither were very popular outside of the ancient runes community.
  • Class of 1922: Slytherin, graduated top five percent of her class.
  • Electives: Ancient Runes, Arithmancy
  • NEWT Classes: Ancient Runes, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Potions and Transfiguration
  • Clubs: Dueling and Art

Relationships

Phil

Phil
Phil and Astoria work together at the Daily Prophet, and have more recently begun to share articles and ideas in collaboration. Phil is a fair bit younger than Astoria, but Astoria thinks she is quite talented and could become one of the most skilled journalists in Britain. They are friendly outside of work.

Rhyeline

Rhyeline
Rhyeline and Astoria have not known each other for very long, but they share many similar interests including history, ancient runes, politics, and the Unity Party (although the last is not publicly known). Astoria is fond of their friendship.

Gertrude
Gertrude Flint Bletchley is Astoria's mother, and the sister of Headmaster Gervase Flint. Gertrude and Astoria have never seen eye-to-eye, and Astoria has never been her mother's favorite. They rarely visit, but when they do tensions typically come to a head.
