Hogsmeade Weekends

The special trips in which Third Years and above can go to Hogsmeade Village (only with a permission slip from the student's parent or guardian) happen bi-monthly, on the first and third weekend of every month.

Eligible students may go to Hogsmeade freely after classes on Friday (3:00 pm) until curfew (10:00 pm), when they are expected to be back in their dorms at Hogwarts. On Saturday and Sunday they may from after breakfast (8:00 am) until curfew (10:00 pm) on the same day.

January

  • Ravenclaw VS Slytherin - Hogwarts Quidditch. Please see the Discussion BB and check +events on game and the Facebook Community for more specific dates and times.
  • January 1st - London - New Years Day Parade.
  • January 1st - Hogsmeade - New Years Ceilidh!
  • January 4th - Hogwarts - Winter Hols End. 11AM Hogwarts Express leaves London for Hogwarts.
  • January 5th - Twelfth Night. Christmas Decorations taken down or it's bad luck.
  • Monday After January 5th - Plough Monday traditionally marked the beginning of the new agricultural year.
  • January 25th Scotland - The birthday of Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796), celebrated with great festivity by the Scots. Burns Suppers are traditional celebrations on this day.
  • January 25th Wales - St. Dwynwen's Day. Welsh patron saint of lovers. St Dwynwen's day is celebrated in Wales and commemorates the patron saint of friendship and love.
  • Lunar or Chinese New Year - The first day of each Chinese year will always fall sometime between January 21 and February 21, inclusive, and takes place at sunset on the day of the second (sometimes rarely on the third) New Moon following the winter solstice (21 or 22 December). The Festival lasts 15 days.
    • 1940 February 8th - 23rd - Year of the Dragon.
    • 1941 January 27th - February 11th - Year of the Snake.
    • 1942 February 15th - March 2nd - Year of the Horse.
    • 1943 February 4th - 19th - Year of the Sheep.
    • 1944 January 25th - February 9th - Year of the Monkey.
    • 1945 February 13th - 28th - Year of the Rooster.

February

  • Gryffindor VS Hufflepuff - Hogwarts Quidditch. Please see the Discussion BB and check +events on game and the Facebook Community for more specific dates and times.
  • February 1st or 2nd - Imbolc, February 1st or the first Full Moon in Aquarius, is a time of cleansing and newborn lambs. The name, Imbolc, comes from the word 'oimelc' or sheep's milk. It is a festival of the Maiden in preparation for growing and renewal. Also known as: Candlemass, Imbolg, Bride's Day, Oimelc, and Brid's Day
  • February 2nd Candlemas - Celebrating mid way through Winter candles are blessed.
  • Second Friday of the Month Kissing Friday. English schoolboys are entitled to kiss girls without fear of punishment or rejection.
  • February 14th - Valentine's Day
    • Hogwarts - Weekend Before and after the 14th are Hogsmeade Weekends. If the 14th falls on a weekend then the weekend before and during are Hogsmeade Weekends. Dinner Feast on the 14th is all made with chocolate. Desserts are insane!

March

  • March 1st St. David's Day is celebrated in Wales in honour of Dewi Sant or St David, the patron saint of Wales. Many Welsh people wear a daffodil which is a national emblem of Wales. Welsh Students at Hogwarts are allowed to wear a Daffodil on their uniform this day.
  • Second Sunday of the Month Mother's Day. The mothers and/or female guardians of Hogwarts students are allowed on School Property during Lunch time. To share in a nice meal with their child.
  • March 17th St. Patrick's Day.
  • March 21st - Spring Equinox or Ostara, around March 21, is when light and darkness are in balance but the light is growing stronger. Ostara was not originally a part of the Celtic year, and all of its associations were given to Beltaine until recent times. Because it was named for the Teutonic Goddess of Spring and New Life, Eostre, it is assumed that it was brought to prominence in the Celtic world by the Saxons.

April

  • First week of April - Hogwarts - Spring Holiday. On the preceding Friday at 11 AM the Hogwarts Express leaves Hogwarts for London.
  • April 1st - April Fools Day. A day of jokes and tricks. You have to play the joke before 12 o’clock midday, otherwise the joke is on you. At Hogwarts this is one day when Peeves will not be up to his regular tricks, that is until 12 o'clock midday. If a student that's remained at school hasn't tried to prank Peeves before 12 o'clock midday then he'll go after them with lots of pranking vengeance.
  • April 15th - Spring Holiday Ends, 11 AM Hogwarts Express leaves London for Hogwarts.
  • April 23rd - St. George's Day is the church festival of St. George, regarded as England’s national day (although not an official bank holiday). On this day some patriotic English people wear a rose pinned to their jackets. Students at Hogwarts are allowed to wear a rose pinned to their uniform on this day.

May

  • First weekend of May - Professional Quidditch season ends.
  • May 1st - Beltaine, is May 1, or the first Full Moon in Taurus. Other names for it are May Day or Lady Day. It is primarily a fertility festival. A time of great magic that will reach its height at Summer Solstice, it is good for all divination and for establishing a woodland or garden shrine. The house guardians should be honored at this time.
  • May 1st - Hogwarts - May Day in the Hogwarts Gardens the Head Girl is crowned the May Queen and there is Morris Dancing and Maypole Dancing. Each house has their own pole with house color ribbons and then a central large pole is the finale and it is decorated in all four house colored ribbons.
  • May 12th - Coronation Day - Gun salute to mark the anniversary of the day when the King was crowned (in 1937). A 41-gun salute at 12 noon fired by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in Hyde Park, London
  • May 29th - Oak Apple Day otherwise known as Pinch Bum Day. Sprigs of Oak and an apple are worn to ward off being pinched on the bum. Hogwarts Students are allowed to wear these things on their uniform on this day.

June

  • Hogwarts Exams Hogwarts - Exams Begin. Every student in every year receives exams of some type in the classes they take. Notably 5th Years receive their O.W.L. exams and 7th Years receive their N.E.W.T.s. This date marks an end in normal curriculum. After the exams are taken all class curriculum turns into review for the remainder of the year. This is also when 2nd years meet with their Heads of House to discuss which Electives they are going to take. 5th years meet with Heads of House to determine if they will be Graduating Hogwarts or continuing into 6th year and if so, which N.E.W.T. level classes they will be taking 6th Year. Exams end the next week on Friday.
  • Hogsmeade Weekends - To celebrate the end of Exams, every weekend after the Friday exams end til End-Of-Term Feast is a Hogsmeade Weekend.
  • Second Saturday of the Month - Trooping the Colour is the celebration of the Monarch's 'official' birthday. Since the 1700s this day was designated to celebrate the birth of the current King or Queen of England, no matter when they were actually born. There is a parade and salute and grand celebration.
  • Third Sunday of June - Father's Day. The fathers and/or male guardians of Hogwarts students are allowed on School Property during Lunch time. To share in a nice meal with their child.
  • June 21st - Summer Solstice or Litha, about June 21, is when the hours of daylight are longest. The Sun is at the highest before beginning its slide into darkness. Traditionally, herbs gathered on this day are said to be extremely powerful.
  • June 25th - Hogwarts - Exam results released.
  • Last Friday of June - Hogwarts - End-of-Term Feast. During this feast the end of term rewards will be passed out and Hogwarts will say good-bye to this years crop of Seventh Years and 5th Year Graduates.
  • Last Saturday of June - Hogwarts - End of Year - Hogwarts Express leaves Hogsmeade for London at 11am. For those children under the age of 16 that are not using the Express, they may be picked up at Hogwarts Gates at 11 AM IC. For those who are aged 16 and over can egress the castle and go on their way as they like at 11 AM IC.

July

  • July 5th - Tynwald Day is the national holiday of the Isle of Man (Isle of Man: One of the British Isles in the Irish Sea).
  • July 12th - Northern Ireland - Orange Men's Day is when Protestant Irish march with drums and pipes to commemorate the Battle of Boyne, which occurred on Ireland’s east coast in 1690.
  • July 15th - St. Swithun's Day (Also known as St Swithin's Day) Saint Swithin was England’s Bishop of Winchester. Supposedly 40 days of bad weather will follow if it rains on this day.
  • July 20th - Hogwarts School supply lists are mailed out. Students selected to be Prefects are notified at this time as well.
  • Third Week of July - 1934, 1938, 1942, 1946, 1950, 1954, 1958, Quidditch World Cup.
  • Third Monday of July - Swan Upping - Swans are counted on the Thames.

August

  • August 1st - Lughnassadh is August 1 or the first Full Moon in Leo. This is a preharvest festival, the turning point in Mother Earth's year. The last herbs are gathered. It is a celebration in honor of the god Lugh's wedding to Mother Earth.
  • August 1st - Lammas Day is the traditional harvest festival when the first bread was made from the new corn.
  • August 1st - Yorkshire Day celebrates the historic English county of Yorkshire, the largest region in England. Also anniversary of the Battle of Minden which was in 1759.
  • Last weekend of August - Professional Quidditch season begins.

September

  • September 1st - All aboard the Hogwarts Express at 11 Am from London to Hogwarts. Start-of-Term Feast.
  • September 3rd - Classes begin.
  • September 23rd - Autumn Equinox or Mabon, was a time of rest after labor, completion of the harvest. Again the hours of day and night are in balance, with the darkness increasing. All preparations for the dark of the year and the year's ending were made, thus bringing us back to Samhain.

October

  • October 31st - Samhain, pronounced sow-en and called Halloween today, is the ending of the Celtic year. The Celtic new year actually begins at sunset on October 31. This ritual is known as Ancestor Night or Feast of the Dead. Because the veil between the worlds is thinnest on this night, it was and is considered an excellent time for divination. Feasts are made in remembrance of dead ancestors and as an affirmation of continuing life. A time for settling problems, throwing out old ideas and influences. This is either celebrated October 31, or the first Full Moon in Scorpio.
    • Hogwarts Events: All junk food feast at Hogwarts. Pumpkin Carving Contest, Costume Contest.

November

  • November 24th - Triwizard Tournament Cancelled.

December

  • December 14th - The King's Birthday. Cannons are fired off in celebration.
  • December 21st - Christmas Holiday, Hogwarts Express goes from Hogwarts to London, 11 AM.
  • December 22nd - Winter Solstice or Yule. This is the time of death and rebirth of the Sun God. The days are shortest, the Sun at its lowest point. The Full Moon after Yule is considered the most powerful of the whole year. This is a light festival, with as many candles as possible on or near the altar in welcome of the Sun Child.
  • December 24th & 25th - While most wizarding homes are secular. Christmas Eve and Christmas is still a time to feast and be with family and exchange gifts. Those families of course with Muggle Christianity influence celebrate the days in a more religious way.
  • December 26th - Boxing Day
