Eshu's got a sense of style

Eshu Akinyemi stands at five feet and nine inches, a lithe build and an aura of supreme confidence. With high cheekbones and smooth complexion, his leonine features seem young, yet ageless. With a subtle quirk of his full lips, his almond-shaped eyes glint with mischief. He keeps his dark hair quite short and is always clean shaven.

Eshu speaks in a smooth purr, rarely raising his voice. He never walks in straight lines, tending to let his path meander, even when headed to a specific destination.

Eshu's clothing is sharp and timeless. Though he wears a waistcoat and tie, he forgoes the jacket and rolls his white shirt sleeves up almost to his elbows. His fedora is tilted at a slight angle, giving the impression of always being a little off-center.

During a torrential downpour in the Congo, Enid Pettigrew met the man she would marry. Well, the third man she would marry. Enitan Akinyemi was of a reclusive tribe of African wizards, called the Obai, for which Enid has been searching for months. But Enitan took pity on the woman and her daughter, Darla, and showed them to shelter. Enitan was drawn in by the boisterous Englishwoman's addictive energy. They warmed each other that night, and in the morning, Enitan showed the British women to the Obai village.

Enid charmed many of the Obai, but none more than Enitan. A month later, Enid became one of Enitan's wives, and he became her guide through Obai lands. In time they left the village, Enitan joining them to experience the outside world. Before long Enid was with child, and nine months later she gave birth to a son. As he was born on the open road, they named him Eshu, after the orisha of roads.

As Eshu grew, he lived up to his name, showing a streak of mischief a mile long. His parents separated when he was two years old (though technically never divorced), leaving him primarily in his mother's care. It was no surprise that he developed Enid's love of adventure. He regularly visited his father, and on some occasions his father even came to England to visit him. Eshu was well-versed in Obai and African culture, he was a traveler at heart, and belonged to no one land.

At Hogwarts, his bold demeanour and fearless sense of adventure saw him sorted into Gryffindor. He got into his fair share of trouble, but nothing too serious. He was academically average, finding classrooms uninteresting compared to the education he received roaming the world with his mother in summer. Still, he did well in Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology, even going on to take his N.E.W.T.s in those subjects.

Eshu returned to the crossroads and wild places of the world the very day that he left Hogwarts. But for the first time, he went alone, without his mother's guidance. She was heartbroken, but it wasn't unexpected, given Eshu's powerful independence. When he needed money, he would find work as a travel guide, mainly for Muggles, entertaining them while veering them away from magical places, and telling them fantastical stories and legends to mask the magical truths they might glimpse. He wrote to his family often, telling them incredible stories about his adventures. Some were true, others were flights of fancy. It didn't matter. All of his tales were born from the seeds of truth, even if they flourished into something else.

RP Hooks

  • Worldly: Eshu has been all over the world, especially Africa. He even works as a guide for tours, safaris, and the like.
  • On the Road: Eshu comes and goes quickly. He will breeze into town one day, and be gone by the next morning, only to show up again days, weeks, or years later when least expected. Still, he has a knack for showing up just when he's needed — or at least when it will be most interesting.

  • Wealth: Comfortable: Eshu's work as a guide brings him enough money to live and travel on.
  • Mischievous: Like his namesake, Eshu has an impish streak. He loves a good prank, and enjoys a bit of light-hearted teasing.
  • Independent: Eshu is very much his own man, and doesn't like relying upon other people.
  • Impulsive: Eshu isn't much of a planner. He acts on instinct and whim…and it's not always the best decision-making process.

Mum gave us all a childhood to be envious of. Darla might not completely appreciate it, but I have no regrets. Still, she can be a little clingy. But she's a mum. Guess that's just who she is. But this bird's got to spread his own wings. It makes it all the sweeter when we see each other. In the meantime, at least we've got letters.

My big sister and I don't have much in common. We get along well enough, but I think she can only take so much of me. She got her fill of adventure back when it was just her and Mum. Now she wants a more stable life. I see her when I breeze through London. But mostly we just write each other now and then.

My baby sister's a lot like me and Mum. She's got curiosity for miles. Plenty enough to get her into trouble…usually for following me into it. But I got to play big brother and keep her safe. I always make sure to see her when I'm in the U.K.

Brandy's the kind of woman that knows how to savour the taste of life. We go back to Hogwarts, and we've been mates ever since. I try to see her whenever I'm in town. That usually turns into a lot of drinking, maybe some dancing, and an occasional adventure in the sheets. But celebrations aside, Brandy's the sort that's always there to wrap her coat around you when the cold winds come blowing. I'm glad to have her in my life, and in Zoe's.
