Character Information
Portrayed by Mark Addy
Name: The Fat Friar
Birthday: Unknown
Position: Hufflepuff House Ghost
Lineage: Ghost

Fat, short, and quite jolly, this ghost, affectionately and accurately dubbed the Fat Friar, has the look of a medieval Franciscan monk about him: tonsure, brown burlap habit, rope belt, crude leather sandals…the works. He has twinkling eyes and a ready smile, with the sort of pudgy cheeks and barrel-chested build one would expect from a corpulent man of a kindly disposition. Often in his hand, he carries a ghostly mug full of a phantasmagorical brew. He also has the distinction of being known as the Hufflepuff House ghost.

Little is known of the origins of the Fat Friar. He once attended Hogwarts and was sorted into Hufflepuff. He was a Christian, which is uncommon, but not unheard of for a wizard. What was unusual is that he was a man of the cloth. Ultimately, it was his connection to his religious order that was his downfall. For a time, he was revered for his astounding healing abilities, such as being able to cure the pox merely by poking peasants with a stick! Some believed his powers to be divine in nature — a gift from God. But when senior churchmen got wind of his ill-advised habit of pulling rabbits out of the communion cup, they grew suspicious and investigated this corpulent clergyman. Eventually, they declared his abilities to be witchcraft (and they weren't wrong), and put him to death.
