The only bank is the wizarding world is Gringotts Wizarding Bank, owned and operated by goblins. Located on Diagon Alley, it is the repository for the vast majority of wizard wealth and valuables, and will even exchange Muggle currency for wizarding coinage. It may seem strange for wizards to put that much trust in goblins to manage the major hub of the wizarding economy, but despite their reputation for greed, goblins are also renowned for their adherence to the letter of their contracts. As long as wizards are careful about what they sign, the goblins can be counted on to hold up their end of any agreement.
The motto of Gringotts Wizarding Bank is "Fortius Quo Fidelius", a Latin phrase that means "Strength through loyalty".
Curse-Breakers
One of the more exciting professions in the wizarding world is the Gringotts Curse-Breaker — a witch or wizard that seeks out ancient tombs and other historical sites, specializing in the removal of curses and other security measures placed upon treasure troves and artifacts. There is a good deal of romance and legend surrounding Curse-Breakers; they are viewed in the way a Muggle archaeologist might be in some pulp serial. It is a dangerous profession, as the risk is high of suffering from some long forgotten curse (many of which are lethal).
Curse-Breakers must have passing O.W.L.s in Arithmancy, as well as N.E.W.T.s in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, and Charms. Most importantly, nothing short of an "E" in N.E.W.T.-level Ancient Runes will be acceptable to the goblins.
- Skill Requirements: — Minimum Skill levels are Ancient Runes 6, Arithmancy 4, Charms 4, Dark Defense 4, Potions 4, and Transfiguration or Conjuration 4.
