Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry
Hogwarts_01.jpg

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located in the rural mountains of Scotland, near the wizarding town of Hogsmeade, and not far from Dufftown, a Muggle community (though the spells shielding the school prevent any Muggle from finding it). Hogwarts teaches magical children from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The student body is sorted into four separate Houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. The decision of which house a student belongs to is made during the Start-of-Term Feast at the beginning of each school year, during what is called the Sorting Ceremony. In this ceremony, a sentient artefact called the Sorting Hat is placed on each new First Year's head. Through some magical process, the Hat senses the new student's potential, inclinations, and possibly even a glimpse of the future, and declares the most suitable house for that student. It has been known to make unexpected decisions, usually because it sees some hidden quality in the student that may not be obvious to others, or because it realizes that social factors might hinder a student's progress in a given house (which is why it will not sort half-bloods and Muggle-born into Slytherin, knowing they would be mice in a viper's nest).

Demographics

Roughly 250-280 students attend Hogwarts each year. Each house has about 60-70 students in it, with about 8-12 students per year in each house (or about 35-45 per year in all houses). Naturally, all of these numbers can vary based upon current wizard population, birth rates, instances of home-schooling*, and so on.

(*Home-schooling is not an option for player characters. All PC children must attend Hogwarts.)

Hogwarts Positions

While the Professor positions are filled by NPCs that are Staff controlled there are +Positions for adults such as: Guest Lecturer and Assistant Professor.

As for the children, the +Positions available are: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.

Hogwarts Ranks

The student ranks are: Student, Prefect, Head Boy, and Head Girl. You must be approved by staff to be anything other than Student. If you are interested in your character becoming a Prefect, Head Boy, or Head Girl, put in a +request in game (new characters that are already in one of these positions must get staff approval before submitting the character).

The school motto is: "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus", which is Latin for "Never tickle a sleeping dragon."

Student

A student is any child being educated at Hogwarts. It requires nothing more than enrollment in the school.

Prefect

A prefect is a student who has been given extra authority and responsibilities by the Head of House or Headmaster. It used to be that one male and one female student were chosen from each house in their Fifth Year to act as prefects, and continue to be prefects in their sixth and seventh years until they leave school. But during the 1939-40 school year, the faculty elected to alter the organisation of prefects, allowing each Head of House a certain number* of prefect appointments that are no longer restricted according to gender. Prefects must still be at least Fifth Year, and while most are still appointed in the summer preceding their Fifth Year, there can be exceptions to this.

*This number is left deliberately vague for OOC reasons.

Head Boy / Head Girl

The Head Boy and Head Girl are two Seventh Year students who are, in essence, the heads of the entire student body. They have all of the same duties and powers as a prefect, as well as additional responsibilities and authority, as assigned by the Headmaster. It is their job to organise the prefects and provide them leadership when needed. Each year, both a Head Boy and Head Girl are selected from the Seventh Years. Usually, they are selected from the existing prefects, but not always.
