Extras
"Extras" are official school clubs and classes beyond the normal student's load. (Unofficial clubs are generally more casual than official ones, and are not considered extras. Quidditch is not considered an extra, either.)
The normal load is:
- First-Fifth Year: Core classes and 2 electives
- Sixth-Seventh Year: Up to 3 N.E.W.T.-level classes
- 0 official clubs
Anything beyond these numbers is an extra. Extras can be taxing, and the school may place limits based on academic achievement. A student may take a number of extras equal to their Mind rank, with the following restrictions:
- Only one additional elective may be taken (for a total of 3), and this counts as two extras.
- Taking a fifth N.E.W.T. class requires special approval.
At Hogwarts there are many extracurricular activities and clubs that have been formed over the millennia for young witches and wizards to enjoy in whatever free time they might have. Each club must have a staff member willing to volunteer as a mentor, not only to help facilitate events and arrange meeting times and places, but also to help overcome house rivalries, as clubs are inter-house organizations.
If your character is a member of any of these clubs, add the appropriate tags to your character page, and the name will appear here under the member lists.
Official Clubs
The following clubs are officially sanctioned by the Headmaster. Official clubs are granted certain privileges, including free use of the Club Room, the right to teach and practice certain spells, and an assigned faculty Mentor to guide and supervise. Membership in these clubs is open to all students (to join, simply add the appropriate tag to a character's page), unless specifically barred by the Mentor.
Arts Club
The Arts Club is a haven for creative people, both in the fields of physical arts (e.g. painting, drawing, sculpture, photography), and performing arts (e.g. drama, dance, music). Though the two groups meet at the same time, they tend to separate at opposite sides of Professor Beery's classroom. But whenever there is an art show, the performers provide music and help to organize the event. Likewise, any time there is a dramatic performance, it is the artists that design sets, props, and costumes.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Arts Club, put the "arts" tag on that character's page.
Mentor: Professor Palancher
Athletics Club
Wizards tend not to be strongly focused on their physicality. Magic can do so much for them, that only heavily magical sports like Quidditch really capture their fancy. Still, there are those that feel the desire for athleticism, and want to train their bodies as well as their minds. The Athletics Club helps students do exactly that, with a combination of various games and competitions (even the occasional Muggle sport), weight training, as well as following professional sports (even the occasional field trip to an event).
To indicate that a character is a member of the Athletics Club, put the "athletics" tag on that character's page.
Mentor: Madam Hooch
Broom Club
As Hogwarts only offers First Year instruction in flying, this club has been a long-standing tradition for those that wish to hone their broom skills and learn advanced techniques. Nearly every member of the house Quidditch teams join the Broom Club.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Broom Club, put the "broom" tag on that character's page.
Mentor: Madam Hooch
Chess Club
A club for those who love chess and want friendly competition.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Chess Club, put the "chess" tag on that character's page.
Mentor: Professor Lestrange
Domestics Club
Graduates that get out on their own are frequently shocked to learn how little they know of domestic magic. The Domestics Club exists to teach students about all manner of spells for running a household. Cooking charms, safe cleaning spells, anti-pest hexes, and the like are the order of the day.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Domestics Club, put the "domestics" tag on that character's page.
Mentor: Madam Patil
Duelling Club
In the Duelling Club students are trained in the fine art of wand duelling. In essence, it is a self-defence class. While it tends to attract many of those students hoping to show off their magical prowess, they soon find that it is one of the more disciplined clubs, in which the matter of magical combat is taken quite seriously. Club members caught using magic against another person against Hogwarts rules are suspended from Duelling Club on their first offense. A second (or particularly bad first) offense means a permanent ban from the club.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Duelling Club, put the "duelling" tag on that character's page.
Mentor: Professor Lestrange
Student Aides
This isn't so much a club (though the usual limits on clubs do apply) as it is an extracurricular position that students of Third Year or higher can apply for. Student Aides are students that are assigned to assist a faculty member with menial tasks. Occasionally, a talented Student Aide might even be allowed to help in teaching younger students. Student Aides have a moderate amount of authority within the classrooms or other areas that they work, though they cannot deduct house points or assign actual disciplinary action. However, refusing to comply with a Student Aide is likely to end up putting one in trouble with the faculty member they work under. Being a Student Aide is considered beneficial for future employment opportunities, and is likely to earn extra house points for the Aide's house.
Nearly all faculty members have Student Aide positions open, including all Professors, the Nurse, and the Librarian. Exceptions are Headmaster, Caretaker, Groundskeeper, Coach, and any assistant faculty positions.
To apply as a Student Aide, please put in a +request, indicating which faculty member you would like your character to serve with, and why you believe your character would be considered.
Unofficial Clubs
The following clubs are not officially sanctioned by the school, but are private groups that have gained their own measure of influence and renown. Unlike official clubs, these groups do not have open membership, unless otherwise stated.
Book Club
The Book Club is a place where political agendas and blood are laid aside in favor of the literary world. The imagination knows no limitations and here is a club for those who are interested in expanding their horizons; though all books are read by choice and like membership, nothing is forced. No one from any house will be turned away if their interest is genuine enough. Even adults who have an interest of being a guest speaker are invited to contact the club leader to make arrangements for involvement.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Book Club, put the "book" tag on that character's page.
Leader: ???
The Knights of Walpurgis
A secret society founded by Tom Riddle, Niles Avery, and Oberon Lestrange. They are dedicated to learning secret magic that others might fear. The Knights swear an oath of loyalty and secrecy, vowing to protect and support one another, share their forbidden knowledge, and never reveal the existence of the society to outsiders. Any Knight may nominate a new potential recruit, but only the mutual consent of the founders can authorise the invitation of a new member.
Membership in the Knights of Walpurgis is by invitation only. If you feel your character would be noticed by Riddle and invited, please submit a +request detailing the reasons why. To indicate that a character is a member of the Knights of Walpurgis, put the "walpurgis" tag on that character's page.
Leader: Riddle
The Mud Club
A support group for Muggle-born witches and wizards and those that support their right to be treated with equality. Never one to succumb to derogatory slurs, the group's founder, Briar Crocker, called the support group "The Mud Club" to show that words like "Mudblood" have no real power. The Mud Club has open enrollment, and anyone may join.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Mud Club, put the "mud" tag on that character's page.
Leaders: Josie
Alumni
The Pirates
An informal "gang" of young students that favor a piratical theme. Though seemingly harmless, some wonder what they might evolve into one day.
To indicate that a character is a member of the Pirates, put the "pirates" tag on that character's page.
Leader: Cillian
The Slug Club
Whether the Slug Club is truly a club is debatable. It is an informal name for Horace Slughorn's favourite and sometimes famous students. He singles out students he thinks have potential, either because they have influential relatives, or they themselves possess fame or talent of some kind. He invites these select students to parties, notably to a lavish one at Christmas, and keeps in touch with them even after they have graduated, as they can provide him with insider information or various luxuries.
Membership in the Slug Club is by invitation only. If you feel your character would be noticed by Slughorn and invited, please submit a +request detailing the reasons why. To indicate that a character is a member or alumnus of the Slug Club (if approved by staff), put the "slug" tag on that character's page.

Disbanded Clubs
These clubs no longer exist at Hogwarts.
The Magijugend
The Magijugend (pronounced MAH-gih-yoo-gund; singular: Magijunde) began as a youth program at Durmstrang. They are young witches and wizards who are dedicated to the political ideals of Gellert Grindelwald. A Hogwarts branch has formed — formerly as an official school club, but now unofficial — promoting the ideals of "purer forms of magic" and "respect for the history and traditions of the wizarding world."
Unlike other clubs, membership was tightly controlled by Professor Flint, but with his departure, it was left without leadership. When Minister Spencer-Moon took office and public opinion turned against Grindelwald supporters, the Magijugend formally disbanded.
