Description
A cacophonous riot of colour and sound, a veritable bevy of sensory experiences, these are the Portobello Road shops in Notting Hill. This is one of the few places in London where one can find people of all classes and walks of life, from beggars and buskers to landed Lordlings and their entourages. The lure of commercial gain tempts many artisans and hawkers of fine imported goods to set up shop or stall in almost any place that can be had for such a purpose. There are books and buns and baubles, voices clamoring each to be heard through the din, and smells of food, of perfume, of flower carts.
The area itself, nestled as it is in fashionable Notting Hill, is a historical gem, a landmark for tourists and locals alike. The market has been in existence for around 100 years, having developed and grown as it served the wealthy inhabitants of nearby crescents and terraces while providing solid income for the working man in London. It runs almost the length of Notting Hill, roughly parallel to Ladbroke Grove.
