The dominating room inside the cathedral is the nave, taking up most of the central area of the building. Huge marble arches support the roof, with domes between the arches that raise the roof height to 111 feet. The floor of the nave is taken up almost entirely with seating, removable wooden chairs rather than built-in pews so they can be cleared out when the need arises. Only an aisle down the centre, and outside the pillars of the arches, allow room to walk. Down each side wall of the nave are doorways leading to smaller chapels and shrines, which are decorated in beautiful mosaics of varying styles.
