O,3 - Village and Campus Path

Path.jpg

The hard packed dirt winding through the trees has been trampled by millions of students and Hogwarts Professors taking advantage of the reprieve from the halls and towers of Hogwarts, and the books. During the day, glimpses of water can be seen through the trees, and what light is to be had slant across the path as it comes through the interweaving branches far overhead. Wildflowers edge the verge with splashes of reds and yellows and purples against the green foliage and dark tree trunks.

Groundskeeper_Hut.jpg

O,4 - Groundskeeper Area

Close to the Gate but still tucked away in a woody copse is a large hut surrounded in crates and tools for maintaining the grounds of Hogwarts. To one side of the hut is a field of pumpkin vines and on a hill to the other side of the hut is covered in strawberry vines. The hut itself is sizable, simple and made of stone and mortar with a thatch roof.

O,5 - Lake Shore

Shore.jpg

This narrow crescent of grainy sand and smooth small beach stones spans east to west between the cliff face to the east and the large fortified stone campus perimeter wall to the west that runs north to south until it runs many yards into the water of the Black Lake itself and further off to the north. The only spot along the shore that isn't given completely to a topography of rocks and roots, the latter of which extend right out into the lake, it's a commonplace sight to see students hopping about on the rocks or skipping stones across the water.

O,6 - Black Lake

As with most Scottish lakes that are this deep and narrow, the lake near Hogwarts is chilly all year long. Narrow sandy areas from the beach give way to oozing squishing between the toes once a person is waist-deep. A few large rocks lie just underneath the surface of the water, sometimes even breaking the surface - giving a perfect place to jump and dive into deeper areas, or to rest and sun oneself during better weather or simply to talk to friends.

Gates.jpg

P,3 - Campus Gate

The hard packed dirt winding through the trees has been trampled by millions of students and Hogwarts Professors taking advantage of the reprieve from the halls and towers of Hogwarts, and the books. During the day, glimpses of water can be seen through the trees, and what light is to be had slant across the path as it comes through the interweaving branches far overhead. Wildflowers edge the verge with splashes of reds and yellows and purples against the green foliage and dark tree trunks.
The gates themselves are huge, massive wrought-iron gates that stand tall over the path. Connecting the gates themselves to the wall are two stone columns, topped with giant statues of winged boars.

P,4 - Campus Grounds

Extending from the main gate of the castle's courtyard, the road winds through a seemingly-wild parkland of tall grass and wildflowers. The grass is thick and growing long. Thriving in the beautiful dreariness Scottish weather is known for. The leas and fields between small copses of trees and ancient standing stones offer areas to gather with friends or even find some solitude. Natural seating arrangements can be found atop a stone, or the large roots of trees, not to mention in the trees. To the southwest, the glow of reflected light from the lake gleams, water lapping against the sharp rise of the visible cliffs to the base of the castle itself.
More formal gardens crown the campus to the southeast, where a short walk down western path brings one to a pumpkin patch and eventually to what appears to be a gameskeeper's cottage. Looming darkly in the northern background is the Forbidden Forest, a sinister mix of forbidding and alluring.

P,5 - Entry Courtyard

A path leads from the Gates through to the huge bridge that travels across the lake towards the Hogwarts entry hall from here. The otherwise green hill isn't very steep, however, almost like it was designed for long walks and for the carriages. Another, steeper and well-trodden, path leads down to the lake shore and the groundskeeper's cabin, in a roundabout way to the west, while the lake itself is visible over cliffs hundreds of feet tall to the South.
Across the bridge and just outside the entry hall is the courtyard itself, a large rectangular area with roofed walkways along the outside, with benches to sit and arched open-air windows to give a view over the lake. Inside these walkways is a central open square just outside the doors to the castle, with a couple of larger benches to give students a place to sit.

The grand main entrance into the Entry Hall of Hogwarts is here.

P,6 - Clock Tower & Cliffs

Rough cliffs of dark gray and black basalt rear up almost straight up from the depths of the Black Lake to support the southern walls of Hogwarts Castle and the Clock Tower Entrance into the castle's Third Floor. The cliffs form a natural wall almost a hundred feet high with many a crevice and hole dotting its face. The lower ranges of the cliff are constantly wet thanks to condensation from the lake, the higher reaches on the other hand house a few scraggly scrub pines and varied bushes stubbornly in their home cracks clinging against the pull of the winds.

The Clock Tower Entrance leads to the Third Floor of Hogwarts here.

Q,3 - Quidditch Stands

The wide wooden slats of the stands form a nice geometric patterns that plays in the lights and makes all sorts of amazing shapes. It looks to have enough seating in it's five tiered sections that go up almost as tall as Hogwart's itself, could hold the whole school and then some. During matches, pennants and all manner of decorations could be seen flowing in the wind and snapping about. The cheers of the patrons of the pitch rise and fall in volume from soft whispers to roars to wake those all in London.

Q,3: D - Quidditch Pitch

The oval of the Hogwarts' Quidditch Pitch is regulation size at five-hundred feet long and one-hundred eighty feet wide, with a small central circle of approximately two feet in diameter. At each end there are three golden posts holding the hooped goals at different heights. Sixteen towers rise high around the pitch holding seats for hundreds of spectators. During official matches every other tower is decorated in a checkered flag pattern with the colors of the opposing teams and flags representing each of the four houses pop and snap in the wind at the top of the towers. The pitch's grass remains green and vibrant throughout the year, regardless of the season, except for the sandy patches around the scoring areas and at the inner circle where all the balls are released at the beginning of the game.

Q,4 - Training Grounds

The training grounds is a large flat grassy lawn area. It is where Flying Classes are held for the First Years and is used as a club meeting place when the outdoors are called for. There are some busy places at Hogwarts and this is probably one of busiest what with the flutter of wings and the comings and goings of owls on missions to and from the Owl Tower. As it's an ideal place for it, often times non-broom sports are played here in between classes and on the weekends. While not exactly apart of the Castle proper the Training Grounds are surrounded by walls that really are more a string of very large two and a half story archways separating the Training grounds from the rest of the grounds. Up on high, at the top of the Owl Tower, is a sturdy stone sky bridge that leads to the palisades of the castle.

The northern entrance into Hogwarts Castle can be found to the South Here.

Q,4: U - Owl Tower

The Owl Tower's floor is covered in owl droppings, straw, and small animal skeletons. Six huge windows are embedded both in the bottom of the north and south wall sections of this rounded room. The windows are open to the elements and allow the owls to fly in and out as they please. The tower is quite tall and has many recessed arches for each owl to have their own home. The walls below each of the recesses are also covered with splotches of owl droppings and actually give an interesting contrast to the old stone work behind. During the winter, the room is quite cold and there is a danger of ice on the floor. Arching off the south side at the top of the tower, is a sky bridge that leads to the palisades of the castle.

At the top of the tower there is a sky bridge that leads to Hogwarts Roof.

Q,5 - Hogwarts Castle

Hogwarts Castle with all of it's towers, classrooms, passages and depths is centrally located on the Hogwarts Campus.

R,3 - Forest Edge

Forest.jpg

The forest is dark and silent even during the day, large trees looming up high and clustered close together to create a claustrophobic environment. From time to time a sone light manages to find its way through the thick canopy to light a spot on the ground like a miniature spotlight suddenly appearing in an abandoned theatre. Take even one step off the few narrow dirt paths that crisscross the labyrinthine confines of the forest and thick undergrowth starts to pull at trousers or skirts. From time to time the silence is shattered by animal calls or barely broken by the almost inaudible murmurs of the leaves and branches swaying in a stray gust of wind. Light sources be they wands, lanterns, or other objects, necessary even during the day, barely seem to penetrate the murk amongst the forest's tree as if the shadows were swallowing the light. Hanging and posted from many trees along the fringe are signs that read:
!!DO NOT ENTER FOREST!!
The Werewolves will eat you, the Bugbears will suck your blood, the bowtruckles will stab out your eyes and the School will not be held liable for anything that happens to you beyond the tree line. Not to mention it will most likely end in your death. Good news, if you don't die, you'll only be suspended or expelled.

R,4 - Grassy Knolls

The Hogwarts Campus grounds are expansive and just how much so becomes very clear in this area where grassy knolls spread out for over a square mile. Just vibrant green groomed grass densely covers the small hillocks and spans of flat areas. When the weather is right many a picnic blanket - often sporting House Colors - can be found spread out here and there for picnics, studying, socializing or simply rest and relaxation watching the sky above.

R,5 - Greenhouses

On the side of the castle are the greenhouses where the Herbology classes are taught. Set all in a row, the three greenhouses have statues of long, serpentine dragons running along the peaked roofs and are made entirely out of glass. They are home to many exotic and magical plants, including some that are extremely rare, difficult to cultivate and maintain, or even dangerous. Greenhouse One is used specifically to teach First Year Herbology. Because of this it contains no dangerous plants of any kind. Greenhouse Two is a multipurpose greenhouse. At times it is used for classes but mostly it's used by the faculty to grow ingredients for other class, or even herbs and spices for the kitchens. Greenhouse Three on the other hand is used for advanced Herbology classes and houses plants that are dangerous and hard to cultivate, such as Venomous Tentacula, full grown Mandrakes, and Devil's Snare.

R,6 - Viaduct Courtyard

A large rectangular area with roofed walkways along the outside, with benches to sit and arched open-air windows to give a view outside. The walkways lead off to the Viaduct to the east, and the path down to the greenhouses to the North. Inside these walkways is a central open green square just outside the doors leading into the castle, with a couple of larger benches to give students a place to sit.

S,3 - Wandwood Weald

A chittering sound that sounds like a mix of crickets and squirrels comes from the vast variety of trees here. As if they were talking to each other. Really what the source of the noise comes from all of the bowtruckles that reside in the copse of trees that are all trees that are considered 'wandwood'.
Acacia, Alder, Apple, Ash, Aspen, Beech, Blackthorn, Black Walnut, Ceder, Cherry, Chestnut, Cypress, Dogwood, Ebony, Elder, Elm, Fir, Hawthorn, Hazel, Holly, Hornbeam, Larch, Laurel, Mahogany, Maple, Oak, Pear, Pine, Poplar Redwood, Rosewood, Rowan, Silver Lime, Spruce, Sycamore, Vine, Walnut, Willow and Yew all grow here.
Some more magically cared for than others as the Scottish climes aren't exactly what some of the trees are used to growing in. But they've been cared for well enough that each type of tree is a healthy example of it's species and primed for harvesting the branches for wand making. Of course that means surviving the assault of the protective Bowtruckles.

OOC Note: This is part of the Forbidden Forest and is off limits to Students!

S,4 - Forest Fringe

This large patch of open ground at the Forbidden Forest's very edge is covered in pumpkin vines giving the ground a dark green look with sudden and festive splashes of orange in places where the pumpkins can be seen through the leaves. The pumpkin patch is protected from vermin incursions by three large scarecrows randomly set on large poles throughout, dressed in brightly colored rags and floppy hats the wave and snap with the slightest breeze. The Forbidden forest to the north looms grimly even on the brightest of days. Many trees that should have brightly colored leaves here seem to only have the darkest of green leaves, so dark they nearly look black.

S,5 - Gardens

Sculpted box woods and grafted flowering trees border fountains and statuary, benches of a wide variety of shapes and sizes affording a person the opportunity to stop and appreciate the beauty here or a quiet moment from the courtyard. A riot of salvia and geraniums are visible from one angle, maroon begonias alongside tall and bright scarlet bee balm blaze from the southern corner. Black eyes susans, contrast with rising sunflowers, tightly-clustered heads of sunny marigold and goldenrod bob lazily in the breezes that blow from the west. Across from the sunflowers, a profusion of green in the form of hostas and ferns coupled with Canterbury bells and even a few pitcher plants twist in a wilder jungle of more loosely-controlled foliage. Deep blue foxgloves, creeping lobelia and Siberian iris serenely fill the northern corner. Seventh Year Herbology students tend the garden of their own House's colors, those who truly care for their duties obviously taking visible pride in the health of their flowers.

S,6 - Viaduct

The wood work and structure of the bridge that is laid out here is one of function and form. It's covered with a high gable roof, complete with steeples, to keep the rain and weather off the head but it is still left open enough with cathedral windows that are open to the elements on either side. The bridge is fully covered about three feet up on the sides and keeps anyone from falling off. Being up in the air as it is, it's held up by a great number of cross braces and bolts to keep the structure high in the valley of rock and green that it covers and keeps one from falling a long way down to certain doom. It should stand for many, many years.
