Leaky Cauldron

It is a summer night. The weather is warm and raining.

Stepping into the Leaky Cauldron is a bit like standing in two places at once. As the doorway between Muggle and Wizarding London, this establishment strives to maintain a cheerful air of welcome and conviviality. Wooden surfaces are clean, brass is polished to a bright shine, and the smell of great food and even better beverages wafts through from the kitchen and behind the bar. The owners of this wizarding establishment have clearly gone to great lengths to create a hallowed neutral meeting place where politics are kept polite and fights are not permitted. However, despite all the enlightened neutrality, the technology and substance here is all Wizarding. There are floating candles and lanterns, wizarding beverages, wizarding food. There's a table or two of wizard's chess and an enchanted dart board up against the far wall that alternates colours and even shifts the bull's eye around.

Aiden is sitting at a table his head hung a bit low he doesnt have his usual energy or happiness. His journal and quill nowhere in sight not even a book or anything. Aiden doesn't seem like himself in fact he seems quite upset his pumpkin juice and stew sitting in front of him barely touched as he just kind of pokes around the food.

From the direction of Diagon Alley comes Daedalus, with a slightly older girl pushing his wheelchair. "I can't wait until I come to get my wand," he's saying to the girl, "And my books, but have to wait for the booklist." That's when he spots Aiden, and he gives a cheerful wave.

Aiden glances up as the door opens and he gives a closed mouth smile and waves. Odd hes not speaking though normally he will call out to those he knows. Upon getting closer one can notice patches of his skin look different than normal.

Daedalus doesn't notice at first, eager to introduce, "This is my sister, Clarissa." Then, to Clarissa, he says, "This is my friend, Aiden." Then, he looks back to the other boy, and says, "Is something wrong?"

Aiden looksd up and smiles again closed mouth. "No not really." He says but when you look at him you can clearly see patches of skin that look like snake scales some with a diamond pattern some that have a pattern resembling a skull. Than lookin up to Dae's sister. "Its a plethure to meet you Claritha." He says clearly he has a lisp with the irish brogue all of a sudden.

"Hi," Clarissa says, looking completely sceptical of Aiden. But, she says, "I'll order something to eat, I'm starving." She turns to hurry over to speak to Elly, leaving Daedalus to look at his friend curiously. "Well, something is."

Aiden shakes his head and tries to play it off when all of a sudden his tongue flicks out wait can it be forked. He looks embarassed. "Im not thure what happened mate.. One day I was fine havin a thandwith in the park a crow landed on me arm and thcratched it. Than the nexth day I turned into a thnake." He says hanging his head. "Im a freak now Dae."

Of course, tact isn't really common in eleven-year-olds, so Daedalus' first reaction is probably not comforting. "Brilliant! What was it like? What did it feel like? You still have the tongue, does that mean you can taste the air like snakes do?" Then, he shakes his head, "It's a disease, my cousins friend Samira has it too. They'll find a cure."

Aiden looks up startled. "Well ummm… I dont really remember to much. Just looking for someplace really warm and food I was really hungry." He says thinking a bit. "Oh and I seemed to be really angry, but yea I think I can thtill taste the air the way thnaketh do. But It wasnt like I was me it wath weird." Aiden says contemplatively. "Tho you didnt tell your thither that we are kin?" He asks smiling.

Daedalus grins at the description, and says, "Brilliant." Then he blinks, and says, "Oh, right." Clarissa is just returning then, so Daedalus mentions, "Aiden's mom was a Moody too." Then, he looks back to Aiden, "And our grandmother is a Merrythought, too. So we are in multiple ways." Clarissa brightens a little, though she does comment, "That's pretty normal in pureblood families."

Aiden nods and smiles and theres the tongue flick again. He again looks a bit embarassed. "Yeth I know I jutht like meeting me extended kin." He says smiling. "Though Im not thure where me Mum ran off ta actually." He says thoughtfully. "But yeth I wouldnt with thith thing on me worthed enemy."

Clarissa jumps as she sees the forked tongue, and Daedalus explains, "He got that new disease." Clarissa blinks, and says, simply, "Oh." Daedalus looks back, and says, "It doesn't sound that bad. There's lots worse that could happen." Then, he comments, "We're here with Tim and Annie. Except Tim had to go work, he works at the Prophet, and Annie's doing some shopping."

Aiden nods with a smile. "Ive met Tim and Annie in fact Tim wanted me ta bring me mum by thome time, he thays he loves ta meet hith kin." He says with a laugh though the laugh sounds slightly like a hiss. "Thorry Claritha I didnt mean ta thcare ya, iths not me fault I really with it would go away." He says looking off. "I thought it wath cool at firtht now Im not tho thure."

Clarissa nods, and smiles again, "You didn't scare me." Daedalus hides a giggle at this obviously lie. Then, however, he says, "I still think it is. You got to be a stake, most people can't say that."

Aiden laughs a hissing sort of laugh again. "Ith ok if I did thcare you itth not everyday ya deal with a boy who got turned into a thnake." He says with a chuckle. "Well thankth Dae, I mean there ith that but it ith thtill kind of weird for motht. Though it thould be a good thtory at Hogwatth, an' I can thtill write about it in me bookth right?" He says trying to make the best of it.

Rolling her eyes at the mention of books, Clarissa giggles, "No wonder you two are friends." Daedalus just grins, however, and nods quickly, "Yeah!" Then, he adds, "I bet it will be all cured by the time Hogwarts starts."

Aiden laughs this time not even trying to stifle the hissing. "Maybe tho but it thtill will be a great tale ta tell dont ya think?" He asks than to Clarissas statement. "Ya dont like books Claritha? I mean dont ya like a great thtory with a hero and a villain an' all the thruggleth they go through?" Aiden aks politely before turning back to Dae. "I cant wait ta get me wand and figure out what bookth we're goin ta need. Im really exthited."

Their food arrives, and both children start to eat, but Clarissa pauses to shake her head to Aiden. "I do, but not like Dae does. I like listening to his stories, but writing them is hard. I'd rather do homework." Then, Daedalus nods quickly, grinning. "I hope we find out soon."

Aiden nods as he starts to eat again finally and he sips his drink. After he swallows the food and drink the tongue flicks again. "I can underthand that I like to read them and write them it ith a lot of fun to me." He says smiling. "Then again I altho love withardth cheth and quidditth. My liketh are all over." Aiden says with a smile. "I agree Dae it cant come thoon enough."

Clarissa starts to swing her feet a little under her chair, as she eats. She comments, between mouthfuls, "Being there is the best part. Just wait until you get there, it's so much fun." Daedalus grins, and says, "I can't wait!"

Aiden smiles eating and drinking some more. "It ith gonna be great. Better when ya get there with friendth." He says after one mouthful and eating some more. "I wath really lonely before I met up with Dae. Ith been nice having a friend again." Aiden says as he finishes another mouthful and his tongue flicks again. "Any advith Claritha fer uth new kidth?" He then turns and looks to Dae. "We could uth thum prior ta our firth day."

Getting a mischievous look, Carissa looks between the two, as Daedalus looks just as interested. "Don't make the squid in the lake angry, it's been known to eat people. And get an extra set of robes, because one will definitely get bloody."

Aiden gets a bit of a startled look on his face as he glances over to Dae. "Bloody?" He asks timidly before regaining his composure. "What do ya mean don' make the squid angry? Ith hath to thtay in the lake dothn' it?" Aiden asks but he gives Dae another nervous look. "Youre juth' methin with uth right?"

Daedalus looks just as nervous, his eyes wide as he looks to Aiden and then back to his sister. She shakes her head seriously, and says, "It stays in the lake, but… I'm not supposed to tell you," she says, leading in in a conspiratorial way to whisper, "But your first day there, they take you across the lake in boats. It's a test, because the squid won't like you if you're not worthy of being at Hogwarts."

Aiden looks up terrified. "But if we got the letters dothn' tha' mean we are worthy of bein at Hogwarth?" He asked not a look of sheer terror on his face. "I mean how can a thquid know if a withard or witch ith worthy of bein at Hogwarth?" He asks looking to Dae. "Dae if thith ith true, ith gonna be a long day tha' day innit?"

"Getting the letter just means you're not a squib," Clarissa says, as she looks between the two worried faces. "But the squid looks for other things, other weaknesses." Daedalus looks down at his legs, and Clarissa is quick to reassure, "Not that." That would be taking the joke too far. "Inside."

Aiden looks back and forth as his mouth falls open. "Like what what doth it look for? I dont underthand." He says looking back and forth again between Dae and Clarissa at least the squid wont judge on Daes legs. "It juth dothn' theem righ' that a thquid can make that dethithion. Dae dont worry mate I have faith youll be deemed worthy."

Daedalus's eyes are very wide as he looks to Clarissa, but she nods, "Yeah, I'm sure both of you are worthy." Though, Daedalus doesn't look too convinced. After finishing her meal, and seeing Dae has finished his, she says, "Annie should be done soon, we should go find her." Stepping around to pull Daedalus out from under the table, and the boy waves, "See you later."

Aiden waves back. "Later Dae. Thee you thoon."
