Family History

Few bloodlines are as well known in the wizarding world as the ancient, pure-blood Malfoy family. They can trace their origins back to French ancestors, the first of whom to come to England was Armand Malfoy in the early 11th Century. Armand had dealings with William I, who deeded land to the Malfoy family for unspecified, but likely questionable, services.

It didn't take long for the Malfoys to establish a reputation for great wealth and a dedication to pure-blood supremacy. Despite this, they had no compunction about continuing to court the favor of powerful, high-class Muggles. As a result, they initially opposed the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy (though the modern Malfoys have rather successfully suppressed this piece of historical knowledge), as this would cut the family off from a great deal of influence.

Even though the Malfoys lost the fight against the Statute of Secrecy, they have never missed an opportunity to integrate themselves into a source of power. So as the new Ministry of Magic formed, the Malfoys were quick to put their wealth behind men and women that would shape the laws in their favour. Ever since then, the Malfoys have been a major force in electing each new Minister for Magic, sometimes even going so far as to have unfavorable opponents hexed. However, no Malfoy aspired for the position itself until the controversial campaign of Cassius Malfoy in 1940.

Family Identity

Motto: Sanctimonia Vincet Semper (Purity Will Always Conquer)

No family sits higher on the social ladder than the Malfoys. They are the nerve center of wizarding high society. Their favour is a fast track to social success. Their displeasure is a social death sentence.

A great deal of the Malfoys' power lies in their connections to other bloodlines. They have strong blood relations to many other pure-blood families, including the Blacks, Lestranges, Greengrasses, and Rosiers.

Reputation

The Malfoys are well-known for their arrogance. They know they are richer and more powerful than any other family, and rarely have qualms about flaunting it. They do not associate with those of lower class, nor of "dirty blood". As a pre-eminent family among the Sacred Twenty-Eight, the Malfoys hold up their pure-blood status as a badge of honour, and think little of those tainted by Muggle blood. Despite this, they are not as strict about breeding as some of the more fanatical pure-blood lines like the Blacks or Lestranges. Malfoys have been known to marry half-bloods on occasion, so long as that half-blood's lineage is pure enough to produce pure-blood offspring with the Malfoy.

Connections and Relationships

  • Ministry of Magic: The Malfoys have their fingers in just about every Ministry pot. They have contributed financially to the campaigns of a great many elected officials, as well as donated considerable funds to various departments. The favours owed to them from every corner of the Ministry could fill a giant's cookpot.
  • Black Family: The Malfoys and the Blacks enjoy a powerful alliance — one that has been reinforced by blood many times over the centuries.
  • High Society: As the masters of wizarding high society, the Malfoys enjoy strong relations with many other pure-blood families of note. Aside from the Blacks, the following families are generally considered part of the Malfoy's inner circle: Burke, Carrow, Crabbe, Flint, Goyle, Lestrange, Nott, Parkinson, Rosier, Travers, and Yaxley.
