Classroom Description

The burn-marks across the walls suggest that this was either a dragon-taming chamber at a time before the beasts became illegal, or more likely the wizarding equivalent of the practice area for those held back in Charms. Desks are positioned in no particular order throughout the room. A prominent bookshelf along one wall is filled, instead of books, with all manner of leftovers gathered from throughout the school: empty beakers, containers and tubes in boxes; what looks like the skeleton of a small bird with razor-sharp teeth in a glass container about the size of a small jewelry box; and the like.

Synopsis

The Special Class for Underprivileged Magical Students (S.C.U.M.S.) was introduced by Headmaster Flint in the 1939-40 school year. Ostensibly, it was for those students with special needs to get the necessary attention to become productive witches and wizards. The reality was much bleaker, as the classes were comprised entirely of the Muggle-born students of Hogwarts. In fact, S.C.U.M.S. replaced all classes for Muggle-born students, even those at N.E.W.T. levels. Classes were a mix of all different years and houses (except Slytherin, of course), and scheduling for them was a haphazard nightmare, frequently causing students to be tardy or arrive at the wrong class time.

The curriculum of S.C.U.M.S. was a watered-down education, as found in a special textbook, Magic for the Underprivileged and Disadvantaged (M.U.D.). Much of the material was dedicated to educating Muggle-born about how Muggle blood dilutes magic for all of wizardkind. What little practical magic was taught consisted mainly of highly-specific, low-level service spells, such as the Shoe-Shining Charm or the Privy-Unclogging Spell. Indeed, the text and illustrations in the book repeatedly portray happy Muggle-born wizards cheerfully serving their pure-blood masters with their meagre magic.
