Classroom Description

This large oval classroom is lined with small marble columns that end in decorative arches supporting a large domed roof. The sides of the room are lined with many large cages containing a variety of different animals and birds that the more advanced students can use as examples while practicing their skills. Three rows of old fashioned wooden desks, each sitting two people, fill the middle of the room. At one end of the room there is a small stone platform that holds the professor's desk and two medium sized blackboards housed in rolling wooden frames. The whole room is illuminated by four plain, round hanging chandeliers that look very much like metal wagon wheels turned on their side and fitted with lamps.

Synopsis

One of the seven Core Classes taught at Hogwarts. The class it taken by all students from First Year until Fifth Year. It is often taken Sixth and Seventh Year for N.E.W.T. level curriculum as it and Charms class are the two most taken classes in N.E.W.T.s. As the magic learned in both classes is the most prolific within spell theories. Transfiguration is the magic of changing the form and appearance of a subject. This is the field of study in which the rare wizard can learn to become an Animagus. The two magical skills that are linked to this Class in game are Transfiguration and Conjuration. Like charms work, Transfiguration is achieved through concentration, precise wand movements, and the proper pronunciation of an incantation. However it is generally more difficult than Charms and requires great effort.

Professors of Transfiguration: Albus Dumbledore (1908 - 1939), Enid Pettigrew (1939 - )

Each particular subject roughly takes up two weeks time. Every class is two hours long.

In order to take Transfiguration at the N.E.W.T. level a student must have an 'A' Grade in their Transfiguration O.W.L.

Career Requirements

In order to be accepted into the Ministry of Magic's Magical Law Enforcement Department, a person must have received an "E" in Transfiguration O.W.L.s along with "E" grades in four other O.W.L.s. including a required "E" in Defence Against the Dark Arts. If a person wishes to ever reach Inspector rank within the M.L.E. they must have an "E" grade N.E.W.T.s in Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, and Potions.

Curse-Breakers must also have at least an "A" in Transfiguration at N.E.W.T. level to be accepted at Gringott's Wizarding Bank Curse-Breakers must also have passing O.W.L.s in Arithmancy, as well as N.E.W.T.s in Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, and Charms. Most importantly, nothing short of an "E" in N.E.W.T.-level Ancient Runes will be acceptable to the goblins.

The above entries are not the only career requirements. Make sure to do some research when figuring out report cards.

Syllabus

1st Year

1st Year Supplies

  • Book: A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
  • Parchment
  • Quill
  • Wand

September

  • Welcome Seminar: The very first class is all about getting to know each other, seating arrangements and sharing of expectations the Professor has for the students. To begin each student gives their name, Hogwarts House where they are from, what their favorite hobby is, what their favorite Sweet Treat is and one thing they look forward to the most in Transfiguration.
  • The Magical Alphabet: While more details and depth is gone into this subject for those who take the Study of Ancient Runes it is in Transfiguration Class that it is made sure that everyone knows the basic Magical Alphabet. Since everyone has their assigned seating desk cards are to be written and decorated with their name in the magical alphabet.

October

  • Introduction to Transfiguration: The first two out of four branches of Transfiguration Theory are studied, via lecture the first hour then questions and answers and discussion the second hour. In the first week the subject is Transformation, the next week it is Conjuration. These lessons are just the basics and it is made clear that over the years the curriculum will focus on these subject matters with more focus and detail.
  • Introduction to Transfiguration: The last two out of four branches of Transfiguration Theory are studied, via lecture the first hour then questions and answers and discussion the second hour. In the first week the subject is Vanishment, the next week it is Untransfiguration. These lessons are just the basics and it is made clear that over the years the curriculum will focus on these subject matters with more focus and detail.

November

  • Introduction to Transfiguration: The sub-branches of Transfiguration are studied, via lecture the first hour then questions and answers and discussion the second hour. In the first week the subject is Human Transfiguration, the next week it is Switching. These lessons are just the basics and it is made clear that over the years the curriculum will focus on these subject matters with more focus and detail.
  • Transformation Formula: The transformation formula, which is that the intended transformation is directly influenced by body weight (a), viciousness (v), wand power (w), concentration (c), and a fifth unknown variable (Z).

December

  • Transformation Repair Spell: Before the professor gets into the first actual workshop of practical transfiguration, some spells are learned for safety reasons. The Transformation Repair Spell is scholastically taught in the first week and then a practical workshop the next week. Homework is given over the Holiday for the students to bring back something small that can fit in a palm that they consider precious.
  • WINTER BREAK!

January

  • Colour Change Charm: In the first week, the Primary Colours of Red, Blue and Yellow along with Black and White are learned. In the second week, the Secondary Colours of Purple, Orange and Green are learned. The precious item that was brought back after Holiday is used as the target.
  • Colour Change Charm: In the third week, the Tertiary Colours of Vermilion, Amber and Chartreuse are learned. In the fourth week, the Tertiary Colours of Teal, Violet and Magenta are learned. The precious item that was brought back after Holiday is used as the target.

February

  • Extinguishing Spell: Before the professor gets into the first actual workshop of hands on transfiguration, some spells are learned for safety reasons. Since candles and matches will be some of the first items transfigured, the Extinguishing Spell is taught and then practiced.
  • Candlemas: To start things off really easy in honour of Candlemas the students are each given a bundle of simple white candles in a variety of heights and thicknesses. After the scholastic lesson the workshop is that the students must first use a Simple Transformation Spell to change the shape of the candle some how. ((Because of the simplicity of this task there is a +2 modifier to the +roll)) Then they must decorate the candle using the Colour Change Charm. Once completed the professor enchants the candles to hover over the students seating area to illuminate them the rest of the year.

March

  • Formulation Review: Each student arrives to find a crate of miscellaneous things on their desk. The first week they are to use the formula taught earlier in the year to detail out each of the items and then theorize three things the item can be changed into. The second week the crate is back with all new items. Using the same formula and their notes from last week, the students must work out what each item in the crate was last week before the Professor transfigured them into their present form.
  • Colour Tag!: The professor is a rather worldly sort and while she might not publicize it, those with any knowledge of the Indian Holi festival could most likely see a correlation in date and activity. The students are taken to the training grounds and each one is assigned a colour as distinguishable as possible. Then they are turned loose and made to splotch as many other students as they can. The one who has the most amount of their colour wins 30 House Points! Second Place gets 20. Third Place gets 10. 5 points for participation.
  • Field Trip: The fourth week of March is the last week before Spring Break, so the professor takes everyone to the Lake Shore and they have a picnic. Everyone might note that they each get the favorite sweet they mentioned first day of class. Swimming is allowed after the picnic.

April

  • SPRING BREAK!
  • April Fools!: (Belatedly, but still…) Everyone's Precious Item has been Transfigured! Funny and strange items decorate the classroom. All of the students must, without quill or parchment, use the Transfiguration Formula to determine which of the joke items is actually their Precious Item. Underneath the item is a label that is written the Magical Alphabet that must be deciphered to read the name of the actual owner of the item. The translation must be done on paper in full for credit to be given. The one that finds their item first and fully translates their whole name, and the whole name of any other item they selected earns 30 House Points, Second earns 20 and Third earns 10. The rest of the class earn what they might through participation. ((The usual Player-Run Class Rolls to House Points Scale. The winners get their prize in addition to the Rolls Points.)) The next week the items have been returned mostly to their normal appearance. But one small detail is off. The student must find this detail and use the Simple Transformation Spell not the Repair Spell to put it to rights.

May

  • Match to Needle Research: "Acusfors" (Ahh•coo-sa•fors) The theory and practical learning of this first transfiguration spell is gone over.
  • Match to Needle Workshop: This spell is considered the Simple Transformation Spell with the trappings of it being a simple strike anywhere match that is transformed into a sewing needle. When the professor demonstrates the red sulfur tip turns into a red pearl at the head of a golden hat pin. But everyone is expected to have simpler needles and really not everyone will even manage that. There is to be no lighting of the matches or poking of needles. This misbehavior will face the loss of House Points.

September

  • Mice to Snuffboxes Lesson & Workshop: Scholastic and practical. This was the task for the First Year Exam, so it's used to wrap up the month in review.
  • Beetles to Buttons: Every student arrives to find a jar at their desk with one beetle inside of it with a mesh lid. Using the Simple Transformation Spell the student must transform the beetle into a button. The fancier the button, the more House Points are awarded.

October

  • Engorgement Charm Lesson: Scholastic.
  • Engorgement Charm Workshop: The class goes down to the Pumpkin Patch next to Oggs Hut and each student is assigned a similarly sized pumpkin. The one with the largest pumpkin at the end of the day gets 30 House Points, the second largest gets 20 House Points, the third largest gets 10 on top of their other accumulated points for participation.

November

  • Shrinking Charm Lesson: Scholastic.
  • Shrinking Charm Workshop: Once again to the Pumpkin Patch where all of the pumpkins that remain after Halloween are shrunk down and carried to the Kitchen Passage where they are left for the Kitchen Staff to use for pumpkin juice. The student with the most pumpkins shrunk down and carried earns 30 House Points. Second place gets 20 House points and third place gets 10 in addition to their other accumulated points for participation.

December

  • Yule Time Workshop: Using the Shrinking Charm and the Engorgement Charm the students take items from a trunk filled with Yule Time decorations and size them into tree or lawn ornaments. The students get to take their accomplishments home with them. Or if they are not going home. Their decorations are added to those in the Great Hall.
  • WINTER BREAK!

January

February

  • Bird Transfiguration Spell Lesson: The first step of the workshop is to transfigure a stationary target on the students desk, then across the room and then finally thrown by the professor.
  • Snake Summons Spell: In honor of St. Patrick's day coming in a couple of weeks the professor teaches the students how to conjure a snake from the tip of their wands. For safety all students get to stand up on the top of their desks and a large glass box is set up on the ground and that is where the snakes are to be aimed at for release. Anyone that misses the box will lose points. Anyone the purposefully aims their snakes elsewhere will suffer point loss and and detention.

March

  • Obliteration Charm Lesson: The first week of March the Obliteration Charm is gone over scholastically and studied through lecture, questions and answers and discussion. The second week it is practiced within the class. The students partner up, they exchange textbooks and cover a single page, ironically the page that covers this charm in doodles and the like. Any inappropriate doodles will be handled strictly and with the loss of House Points.
  • Obliteration Charm Workshop: After the First Years have their fun with Colour Tag, it is up to the Second Years to come in and clean up the mess left behind. The two who do best in this are made team captains for their own Colour Tag! The professor is a rather worldly sort and while she might not publicize it, those with any knowledge of the Indian Holi festival could most likely see a correlation in date and activity.

April

  • SPRING BREAK!
  • Rabbit to Slippers: Who doesn't like to return from holiday and slip on a comfortable pair of fuzzy slippers? Students practice their Simple Transformation Spell turning a single rabbit into a pair of slippers.
